Have you tried to replace the bulb ? That only one side works means the brake switch and most of the wiring (except the piece that goes from one side to the other) is fine. The parking light and brake light are probably the same bulb, which also rules out the socket, but the bulb has two elements. Open the trunk and look for access from the back. Otherwise look for a some screws that will release the housing.
