92 Sable will not go into gear
My 92 Sable wagon will not go into drive or any other gear with the key in the start position. If I turn the engine off and move the key into the second, unlock, position I can put the shifter into neutral and then start the car and shift into drive or reverse. It's almost like a combination; click forward one -shift to neutral - start car - put into gear - drive. What is wrong and how can it be fixed. The car goes into park with the engine running so I don't have to chase it down the driveway. The warning bing also keeps binging when I take the key out of the ignition until the key is reinserted and taken out???
Thanks for any pearls of wisdom

Check to see if you have brake lights. The car has a switch that is triggered by the brake lamp switch and key on setting to release the shifter lock actuator. If no lamps, check fuses or the switch itself which is attached to the upper part of the brake pedal. I've also seen the wires break at the switch.

Okay, I have no brake lights, thanks for the heads up on that. The fuse is working because the other things that the fuse controls work. That leaves the switch. I can see the switch but am reluctant to change it out. I am taking a ride to my mechanic to see what he is going to charge me. Hopefully that will solve two problems.
Thanks,

Thanks again for your help. The mechanic had the problem taken care of in less than an hour (without an appointment). With parts and labor the bill was $74.00. Now I don't have to worry about a brake light summons and the car shifts with the key in the right position.
Once again, the right answer from the right source.
