oil problem has me SCARED.. help please!
I recently bought a 1993 Toyota Tercel. but, alas, I didn't realize it was burning AND leaking oil when I bought it. I was dutifully adding oil as needed and prepared to live with it until yesterday when I tried to add a quart of Bardahl Stop Leak.
First, I checked the oil level to make sure there was enough room and to my surprise, the dipstick showed nada, zilch, NO OIL! I had just added a quart only 2-3 days before, no problem.
I removed the filler cap on the valve cover and saw that the level was VERY high.
I am an auto dummy but this does not sound good to me. I started the car and let the engijne run for 5-10 minutes in the driveway, monitoring the temp gauge but saw/heard no problems.
My nightmare: something, somewhere is blocking the flow of oil through the engine. I have not changed the oil filter (yet).
Any ideas?

remove the valvecover and look for something restricting the oil from returning to the pan it may just be gunked up with deposits in wich case some of the engine flushing products may help after you remove as much as you can manually while you have the valve cover off. just follow the instructions on the engine flush can, it usually requires you to idle engine for about 10 minutes and then change the oil and filter.

don't do the flush if its backing up that much. It apparently has a lot of gunk on top of the head(under valve cover) I have seen people flush their motors before and oh yeah it flushes all loose. straight to the oil pan, then plugs up your oil pump pickup screen. then your starving for oil which can destroy your engine. The only (first time fix) is to remove the valve cover and the oil pan, dig as much of the gunk out as you can by hand the if you feel comfortable with it (i have) pressure was the top of the head down through all the oil return holes, clean it good, let it dry on top and bottom and reasemble. You will still have some water on the block so run some cheap oil through it for maybe an hour and then put new oil. This is the only way to get the gunk OUT of your engine.
