1998 Explorer "whining" sound

My Explorer "whines" when it is not under power. When ever you get the RPM's up, the noise stops, but when at a red light or any time throttle isnt being applied, an awful sound comes from the engine. I followed the sound to what appeared to be the airbox, and when i took the airbox off it got alot louder. I realized it wasnt coming from the airbox, however, and took off the rest of the intake up to the throttle body, and it turns out the sound is coming from somewhere in or behind the throttle body. Ofcourse teh engine died soon after without the sensors bein hooked up, but i heard it long enough to know where the sound was coming out of. It is a high pitched whining sound. Almost like the moving air is resonationg agaist something. Has anybody else had this problem, or heard of it? any input would be great! thanks!

bad idle speed control valve or also commonly called an idle air bypass valve often causes the noise you describe it would be coming from the throttlebody area.

It does sound like the Idle Air Control
You'll want to figure out if it's the air whistling, or the (little AIC)motor whining
It would not be unusual for the AIC motor to go bad, it's usually just quieter about it

usually just 2 bolts attaching it to the intake shouldnt be very difficult.

If you have the 5.0, not really
Pretty good DIY project actually
Simple unbolt old-bolt on new
Some gasket removal and connector un-hooking

The 6cyl, jeez I just did some work on one 2 days ago, but not IAC
I don't recall anything weird off-hand
It should be the same deal
