can an a/c compressor "overheat"?

a/c works well (not great) as long as the outside temperature is below 90 degrees. once it gets to the mid-90's she'll run well for 5 to 15 minutes, then she'll start screatching and the air goes warm. I haven't been able to see any belt slippage, and it doesn't sound like a belt, and i figure the temperature shouldn't really affect the belt. it's a 14-year old bmw 3 series. that was converted to r134 (not during my ownership). Any thoughts????

Your symptoms indicate a possible restriction in the system. While most a/c complaints in this forum deal with low refrigerant, I believe you need a manifold connected for diagnosis. You can ruin your compressor when the high side pressures exceed working specifications.
