oil wt.

I came from New england + we used 10w-40; in Maryland the place I took my car to recommended 5w-30. Does this sound accurate? I always thought the first # was for winter as you needed a low # so it woud be thin enough for the engine to handle in the cold and a higher number for the summer so it would not thin out due to excess friction.
What do you suggest?
Thank you

should say on the oil fill cap, most cars now use 5W-30 or 5W-20, 10W-40 is not recommended by most manufactures. 10W-40 can cause stuck piston rings.
