Exclamation Chevy S10, need advice

I am thinking of buying a 1991 S10 from a private party. The truck is high mileage but looks and runs well. The seller says it leaks oil from the tail pipe but not a large amount. Could you give me some ideas about what causes this and if it would be an expensive repair. Thank-you

If its LEAKING oil out of the tail pipe, I would not even consider buying it.
If it is a 4.3L, then it probably needs valve seals to cure the blue smoke syndrome (puffs blue smoke on start up). I have a 92 Sonoma with over 200,000 miles and it does not burn any oil (2.8L). Valve seals are cheap, its the labor thats expensive. If this is indeed the problem in your case, call a few local shops and get a rough estimate on labor. Different shops go about this repair in different ways. Some shops will pull the heads off and have them totally redone. Some shops will leave the heads on and do it, which is how I do it. With your rough estimate, you can make the choice on the purchase of the truck.
