Too much of a coincidence
1. Check eng light on. 92 F150 70,000 mi. Owned since new. Has always been trouble free.
2, Mech replaced fuel pressure regulator. Now ok.
3. NEXT DAY tranny would not start out in 1st gear. Fluid way high with bubbles on the stick and seemed too hot. Drove back to the shop and of course when I got there it was shifting normal and the fluid level was ok.
His computer had a code that said the eng computer was not reading 1st gear. He instaled a new solenoid and had the same code. Ditto for the 2nd solenoid. Waiting for number 3 now. I think he also replaced some electronic device on the transmission.
Could he have accidently disturbed a wire or vacumn line while working in the area of the fuel pressure regulator? Seems too weird to me.

Right off the bat I'm confused
I'm not sure the EEC-IV computer can throw a CEL for a bad FPR
You don't know the actual code do you?
Is the CEL still on?
Can you get the codes read now (by someone else though) and post them up
Even if there is no CEL right now, there still can be codes in there
Maybe there's a DIY place near you that'll read them at no charge
Autozone or something
If you can find the hook-up and have a voltmeter I can give you directions to DIY if you want

No, never any drivability problems
Don't know the code. Truck is still in the shop waiting for the 3rd solenoid.
He called other shops and they confirmed that Ford had some bad ones out there as other mechs had run across the same thing.
It just makes me wonder why this came up the very next day after replacing a fuel pressure regulator.

Maybe I'm being unfair, but I really think that he possibly messed it up in the first place, and now he's just throwing parts at it to try and fix the new problem
Which engine do you have?

Another reason I'm confused
I'm more familier with the 5.0, but I think the FPR is in the same spot
The upper intake manifold may have been removed to access the FPR
It's possible that something was disturbed/removed/broken doing this
I just can't think of what
Even if he messed up the upper reinstall and you've got a leak there, I don't think that would make you lose 1st gear

Thanks for your input slickshift.
Just talked to mech and he just received the 3rd solenoid. I have to go out of town until Wednesday and when I get back I will post what happened.I"m glad It's a mystery to you too.
I have always trusted this mech with all my vehicles and he has on occasion told me I didn't need what I thought I needed. I was always a fair mechanic myself until the computers came along ,and now I feel like a complete idiot. I only mess with Model A's and early Ford V8's.
I love my old 4X4 F150 that's never even been of the pavement, and It's hurting my feelings. Gosh, I keep it waxed and looking good. Not fair !!
