Cougar transmission

Have a 1993 Cougar with 83,000 miles. Not used much at all during school when son is away at college. Transmission is a goner. Cottman transmission wants $1700 to put rebuilt in.
Don't know what to do. A lot of money for a car seldom used. Is there a less expensive alternative? Car will go in drive, but reverese will not work.

Thanks,

Howard

I would get a junkyard (ophs, I mean auto salvage supplier) tranny and DIY it.

not much you can do but just get some quotes from several transmission shops and decide if you want to fix it or not im sure you can probably find a better price but it is still going to cost alot to fix.
