Tachometer

I have a handheld tach with a scale which can read rpm for either a 6 or an 8 cylinder engine. How do I calculate the rpm from the reading I get when I hook up to a 4 cylinder engine ?

simple

read the 8 cyl. scale and double it.
if it says 400 rpm on the 8 cyl. scale you have 800 rpm on a 4 cyl. car.
The tach will usually say this on the case.

Thanks, Peabees, I thought it may work that way but I needed confirmation by somebody who knows.
