wacky gas guage

hello, nice to be back w/ u guys i have a 99 chevy s10 pickup 4cyl.
when ever i start the vehicle, the gas guage will go from f to e back to f to half tank mark and continue i'm never sure how much gas i have. could this be a bad sender in the tank or a relay problem, or a bad ground. its got me ?? i tried the gas cap stuff didn't work. any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks,

Most likely it's a bad sender. I know on some cars, if you ground the sender wire, the gauge will read full. Look in a manual to see how to test the gauge and wiring.

You could just record miles and put in gas when it hits a certain amount of miles. Years ago I had an 86 S-10 that read 3/8 tank when it was full and had to do this so I knew when to put in gas.
