You need a new programer board on the back of the instrument cluster. Very common failure part. It has two niCad batteries on it and they leak, damaging the board. Not a cheap part but not to bad to change either. Pull the steering wheel then the cluster and you will see it. Mark the steering wheel to the shaft before it comes off so your wheel is straight when you get done. Also you do not need a puller, just remove the 17mm bolt and it comes right off.

Reaching around doing a tune up he maybe unpluged the sensor by mistake, have a look around the transaxle.

thanks for the advice
sorry it took a while to reply

i'm hesitant to remove the steering wheel
given that there's an airbag
and i'm afraid of setting it off or screwing it up.

i may take it to a mechanic

thanks again
