1992 Cavalier stalling problem

I just bought a used 1992 Cavalier it runs and looks good , my problem is that after I drive about 20 miles the car stalls . I can restart the car while it is in park or neutral and it will stay running , but as soon as I put in gear it stalls again . I let the car sit for an hour or two and the problem is gone for the next 20 miles and everything starts all over again . Any ideas ?

usually it is caused by a sticking tcc solenoid in the transmission causing the lock up convertor not to release thus causing the car to die when you come to a stop.
you can disconnect the connector usually 4 wire sometimes blue or gray on the side of transmission and it will prevent the convertor from locking up you may try this to see if the problem occurs anymore, it may cause a check engine light with the connector unplugged and you should see a transmission shop to see about fixing the problem.
