Gas Mileage aweful???
#1

I have a 5-spd 1993 Nissan Altima, 4-cyc, and I got around 350 miles to a tank when the empty light started to come on. Shouldn't this car get better gas mileage? The car is supposed to hol 16 gallons but whenever I fill up it only holds around 10 maybe 11 gallons, but the gas gauge is all the way on empty...is it just the fact that my gauge doesnt work and im not driving all of the gas out or what? WIth gas at like $2.50 a gallon I would like to increase my mileage as much as possible and getting 22 miles a gallon....I know 8 cyclinder cars that get better or atleast close, I should be getting like 25-28 or something shouldnt I?

I wouldnt call 22 mpg aweful. Have you done any maintenance to this vehicle? Replaced the spark plugs, air filter lately? Just these few things can increase your fuel mileage.
As for the capacity, you just may not be as empty as you think you are. I dont recommend running it completely out of fuel but that is one way to be sure that you know how many gallons it will actually hold. The capacity is 15.9 gallons, but its not going to go all the way empty without leaving some fuel in there. The fuel not only powers the vehicle it also protects the fuel pump (lubricates and keeps it cool)
Good Luck.
Hope this helps ya,

If that 350 miles is from the last time you filled the tank up, and when you refilled it you were only able to put in 11 gallons, then your gas mileage is 31mpg. If your guage is reading low, it is possibly miscalibrated, or not working properly.
Here's a link that explains a good way to calculate your acutal gas mileage.
