AC Clutch problems

i have a 2002 chrysler 300M
AC compressor makes a whirring sound. Goes up and down with the rpms and is losing refrigerant. i refill and it is out in a week and a half. doesnt make the sound when the refrigerant is depleted, but does when it is charged up.
is there a way to tell if it is the compressor or the clutch. And if it is the clutch, is that something ican fix myself?

The compressor is supposed to "whirr" but it could just be louder than normal. It doesnt do it when there is no freon because the compressor wont run without freon in the system. It sounds like you need to concentrate on finding out where it is leaking first. If you continue to go without repairing the leak then you can damage the compressor and other components when the charge gets low and contaminants get in the system.
Hope this is helpful to ya,
Billy
