High squeal noise

Hi all,
I have a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am Gt coupe with a 3.1 LTR. V6, automatic transmission with 83000KM (51,000 miles). I am having a problem with a high pitched noise, almost like a squeal, which happens on and off. This noise only occurs when the interior fan is on the vent function and if I put it to either the AC or the defog, the noise disappears. Sometimes the noise is present when I start the car and then disappears and other times it happens after the car has been running a while and then disappears again. The car runs fine, however the noise is very annoying, especially when the windows are rolled down. It almost seems that the switch for the fan functions is causing it, but that sounds too simple. Any ideas as to what this possibly could be and what the remedy for it is?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This engine should have a fan belt idler. Put wrench on it an and snug the belt. If you are careful you can do this with the engine idling and you can hear if your noise comes and goes
