If you jack that vehicle up and just shake the wheel side to side you will get play on a brand new one.You are over riding the idler arm preload when you do that. One the ground with the suspension loaded the idler arm will not allow that movement.Have some one rock the steering wheel side to side a couple inches and watch for play in the tie rod ends. You may have worn parts so check them first but the wear may be from alignment being out of specs most likely toed out.
