service 4-wheel

I have a 1999 1/2 Chevy PU and the Service FWD light
comes on after driving a while. It will not go into 4 wheel
unless you turn engine off and restart.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin out for this problem. The repair is to replace the FWD switch on the dash. But, to verify this is indeed what you need, you have to take the truck in to the dealer and have them hook up the scan tool. They will check the codes to see if the code present matches the code in the bulletin. You are out of warranty, so you will have to pay for the part and labor. The switch is about $60.00 and expect to pay no more than a half hour of labor. Let us know what the deal is.

Thanks for info MR. DUMMAS but I can't find the service
bulliten you refer to. I work at a medium duty GMC dealership
and have access to GM Service Bullitens, but could not find one
on this vehicle.

OK, then connect the scan tool and check for a DTC. I cannot remember right off hand what the DTC is, but type the DTC in as a keyword on SI2000. I will also look tomorrow and check back with you tomorrow night. Now since you work for a dealer, the part should cost you about 40 bucks or so .
