Sometimes you must loosen the shoes first
They should have some slots in the backing plate to access the star wheel adjusters
There's a special tool, but sometimes you can use a screwdriver
You need to rotate the star wheel....I forget if it's clock-wise or counter, but you'll figure it out
Make sure the parking brake's off

Not familiar with the pontiac and as slickshift said the brakes may need to be loosened but my son used to have an escort. I tried and tried to take the drum off, the shoes where loose and then I noticed there was bolt [screw head] holding the drum tightly inplace

Are there any threaded holes on the face of the drum?
Like that you could put a bolt into?

Hey wait none?
Maybe it's covered by a little slot shaped rubber thingie?
You gotta be able to adjust them manually

Um...it could happen

If the drum is difficult to remove, remove the access hole plug, insert a screwdriver and press to push in the parking brake lever off it's stop
This will allow the shoes to slightly retract
Insert a punch through the hole at the bottom of the splash shield and tap gently on the punch to loosen the drum
Use a rubber mallet to tap gently on the outer rim of the drum and/or around the inner drum diameter by the spindle

if it spins freely then it is probably just rusted on and you need to use a hammer and hit on the face of the drum in several places to loosen it up for it to slide off sometimes you really have to use a large hammer to get them loosened up.
if it drags are does not spin freely then the brakes will need to be loosened before the drum will come off.
