gear indicator adjustment

How do I adjust the gear indicator on a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer (the vehicle was towed and now the gear indicator is off 1-click, E.g. when in drive, the indicator shows the vehicle is in neutral) to show the correct gear the vehicle is in?

There is some adjustment at the shift cable attachment to the trans lever but if your friendly neighborhood tow guy messed with the shift lever he probably bent the cable mount either at the trans or at steering column. When they do not have the key they like to use a lot of pressure and a big rubber mallet to jump the shifter out of park, works like a charm, but causes some vehicle damage most of the time. Can you make them care? I doubt it!
