Spongy brakes when running but not when off

Just replaced the front calipers on my 94 Geo Metro. Bled the brakes and the pedal is hard but a littly spongy as long as the engine is not running. As soon as I start the engine the pedal travels pretty far but there is no noticable sponginess to it. I am not getting any air out of either front brake and the car does stop in about the same distance at it did before replacing the calipers (it has always seemed like the pedal travelled too far but nothing was found by the repair shop).

Any suggestions on where to look for the cause of this?

Thanks,

Pat Russell

the pedal dropping lower once engine is started is a normal condition with any vehicle with vacum assisted power brakes.
if you think the pedal is to low you could try bleeding the brakes again but do all 4 wheels also if it is equiped with drum brakes in the rear they may need to be adjusted up, the rear brakes out of adjustment can also affect the amount of pedal travel.
