A couple questions on 86 T-Bird

Hello!! My boss recently gave me an 86 T-Bird in exchange for hours he owed me. It has the 3.8L V-6 and automatic transmission and most of the opotions. Very surprisingly the glovebox manual was still in the car. In the manual, it said that you should have the fan in the Deforst position when jump starting the vehicle. What is the point of this? It doesn't make sense to me. Also right now the car isn't getting spark. I changed the battery cables and coil and put in a good battery (a little big but it just fits in the compartment). The cap and wires look good, the rotor looks okay but not great. Right now it turns but doesn't start and it is getting fuel. I checked this by using starting fluid and later by pouring some gas into the carb. Does anyone have any ideas on this, since Fords are alien to me. Had horrendous luck with a couple of them about 10 years ago, so I have stayed away form them until I go this one. I just hope that it isn't Murphy's Law all overr again with this car.

There's no such thing as a free car Hirsch

Hey the '86 3.8 is fuel injected right?
CFI (looks like a carb) or SEFI (doesn't)
It's got a distrbuter with the TFI ignition module on it?
If it's injected it must
Those TFIs fail allllllll the time and cause no spark
Ford guys usually keep an known good one handy
I'm pretty sure I saw a test for them though, I'll poke around a bit

PS Cool, I like those T-Birds, does it have the four headlights?

I got the car for back hours I was owed for. It has the four headlights and it is carbed unless Ford uses fuel filters by the air filter. Not sure about the TFI module. Kinda ugly now it needs paint and it has the stupid digital dash.
