Check Engine Light

I have a friend who has a 1992 Toyota Tercel, and the Check Engine light has come on. What do they need to check, and how long can they drive it without doing any real harm?

They need to have the codes read
That will tell the reason the computer lit it up
How long depends on why the computer lit the CEL
It really should be checked right away
Even if it seems fine, it could just make it worse by driving

I believe on the year you could still jump two terminals on the sevice connector and read the CEL flashes to get codes if you want to DIY

If it's the one I'm thinking of, jump the upper left and center terminals of the "lower" group of nine (the upper has six)
Turn the key to on, but not start
Count the flashes
Flash, pause, flash, flash = 12, etc

Check engine lights often come on due to faulty installation of gas cap

Talking

Open the hood and find the scanner connect.
Bend a paper clip into a U shape and connect pins marked E1 to TE1.
(They're shown on the cap)
Switch on ignition and the codes will flash.
Then break out your trusty Haynes manual and decipher those codes.
Or - you can have'em pulled at your local AutoZone for free.
Of course, it would be thoroughly cricket and gentlemanly to buy whatever parts the bugger needs from them.
Their aftermarket parts are as good or better than anybody's

Learn something everyday. All my vehichles have either been older than 90 [with no check engine light] or newer than 99.

is it running fine it could be the oxegen sensencor but try to take off the negitive battery wire for about 3to 4 min and have the key on to assesories then after that put the cable back on and start it up it should go off but it will come back on if there is something wrong if so go get it tested at auto zone or advance they will tell you exactly what the problem is no rush it wont leave you stranded
