tire match

wondering if my Mother in law got ripped off. She had relatively new BFG Premier Touring (70K warrenty) tires on her Saturn Wgn.(only had about 8k on them) One tire got damaged and they credited her the full price toward new, as per warrenty. Cool.
However they did not have that one in stock and said she had to have matching tires for safety, and so sold her two new Michelins (80K warrenty) Both original BFG and new Mich. were P185/65R15 86T, so why did she have to replace the perfectly good tire. I can understand matching tire size, but these were identical, just differnt brands. What am I missing?
Thanks

Sales commision!

If she couldn't wait for a replacement tire, I'm sure the same size with similiar tread design would have been fine. Especially if it was mounted on the rear.

Best to have same brand and thread pattern on same axel. Different brands may not have same rubber compound and can affect stopping especially wet.

Same size different brand does not necessarily guarantee same circumference.
