hatch handle broken

Hello,

I have a 2001 Toyota Sequoia SUV. My wife reported that the back handle cracked upon attempting to open the back hatch. Indeed the handle to the back hatch is cracked and broken.

Any idea on part places and necessary diagrams, etc. I would need to repair this problem myself?

Thanks,

Joey

Pretty common problem, although it's usually the plastic door handles that break from so many opening and closings. Finding a diagram may be tough. I think I would remove the inner door panel and make a visual inspection to see how accessible it is. Should be fairly simple; couple of rods with clips on them and a couple of bolts/screws holding the handle on. You might go ahead and get the replacement handle (it'll be a dealer item; make sure you have the color code from the sticker in the driver's side door jamb) and while you're there ask them to print the exploded diagram off the computer for you. Should be enough to accomplish the job.

cracked handle

Thanks,

The window regulator normally causes the handle to break? Also, do you agree that the easiest way to access the handle to fix it is by removing the inside panel on the back hatch?

I plan on ordering the part next week and asking my local Toyota dealer for a diagram of the handle mechanism.

No the regulator dosen't cause it to break...It has to be removed to access

the bolts for the handle.

Nothing special, you may need a 10mm flex socket. other than basic screwdivers etc.

Tow Guy had a brain fart. I was thinking a van-style hatchback with a fixed window vice the type with a roll-down window.
