Corolla runs better when it rains

Why does my carburated 86 Corolla run better when it rains? It seems to like a foggy day too. It has a new air filter. The car idles rough and stinks of unburnt gas. The mpg is also down. I'll need to work on tuneup before Smog Check due in December. Any suggestions?

I would start with the spark plugs and maybe the wires as well. Any idea what maintenance has been done?

Tune-up every two years includes replacing plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Air filter replaced every year. Oil changes every 4k miles. It's using a little oil as the car has 255k miles.

Is it due?
In my experience this vintage engine likes fresh cap'n'rotors
You might want to check those, or just replace them as you'll want to do it before the smog test anyway
...and the plugs and wires too, might as well
Might want to check the primary and secondary resistance in the coil also

I would think taking a look at the carb would also be a good idea.
