'99 GMC Sonoma - Oil leak

The other day I noticed oil on the rear axle of my roommates '99 Sonoma. Thinking it might be something as simple as the seal being blown or the vent tube being clogged (wishful thinking), I crawled under there for a look. Turns out there are several oil splatters on the underside of the truck of a fair size and the transfer case (I think...I'm relatively new to working on cars and am still learning what everything is) is covered in oil, though some of it appears older. Also, farther up the driveshaft, right above a universal joint is another, seemingly indepedent oil spray line. My dad thought it might be transmission fluid but the transmission case is clean and further inspection of the oil proves it to be not just dirty (as he theorized) but dark brown to black in color. Can anyone help me or have I gotten in over my head? Lol.

What color is the fluid? Does it smell like gear oil?

It's dark brown to black and it could be gear oil.
