1992 Geo Storm Speedometer cable

The car is making a clicking noise in the dashboard behind the steering wheel and sometimes the speedometer shoots up to 95 when on ly going about 30. I was told that it is probably my speedometer cable going bad.

Is there anything I can do to help prolong the life? If not, is that something easy to change? I heard you would have to take a lot of the dashboard out, is that true? thanks.

It is a lubricant of graphite in a solvent solution. May still be available at an auto parts store. You still need to get behind the dash to pour it into the cable sheath.
