95 probe auto shifter locked in park

My sisters car is a 95 ford probe with the auto tranny. Won't move from park. Should only come out of park with the brake pedal pressed right? She says it seems like the shifter botton doesn't want to push all the way in. Is there a switch that is connected to the brake pedal that would be bad and keeping the selector locked in park?

do this

Do not start car turn key to first click put in neutral then start car I bet it is the saftey switch. It will not go from park to drive but if you put the ignition switch to the first click you can move the shifter to netural to start. Then go to drive.

Negoshe8n,

Yes, there should be a switch attached to the brake pedal. Some vehicles have more than one brake switch so checking the brake lights is not always a surefire way to know if your shift interlock brake switch is bad. Have you checked all the fuses already?
