97 T-Bird: Shift lever locked in park

97 T-Bird auto transmission shift lever locked in park. Trouble started several days ago with difficulty shifting out of park, but would unlatch with a little jiggling. The release button on the shift lever handle doesn't seem to depress freely. Now, if I could get it unstuck once more, I'd be happy to take it right to the shop...any ideas?

try this

It might be your saftey switch the one you press when you put on the brake.
Turn key but do not start 1st or second click I forget. Then put in netural and start car in that gear. You will be able to drive.Just dont go to park.

I have a similar problem with my Escort. I've tried moving the shift lever when the key is in different positions without any positive results. Did you ever get this issue resolved? Where the release button won't depress all the way I think this may be a mechanical problem of some kind.

override

Sometimes there is a override button it is around the shifter and should be the size of a postage stamp.pry it off and it should be under there.(floor shifter) models.

Thanks very much. I found the override and am back on the road.

Is there anything I can do about the underlying problem though, or should I take it in to the shop? I'm sure my wife won't want to drive around with a screwdriver stuck in her console.

park netural saftey switch

I would highly suspect the park netural saftey switch has gone south. This device was installed so you have to have brake pushed to switch gears. Were it is on your car I have no idea but I would do a quick google search and I am sure you can find it.
