Brake light on, no heat, no transmission, help!
I have a 1994 chevy 4X4 with a 4.3 vortex motor. A few days ago when I started my truck, I noticed on my dash, that the brake light was on. I thought maybe the light was stuck on because it was very cold out that morning. After pulling out of my driveway, the transmission would not shift out of first gear, (it's an automatic). I also noticed that the speedometer and the heater fan wasn't working either. I shut the truck off for a minute and started it back up. The brake light went off, heater and speedometer worked, and the transmisson worked fine. The truck would do this every so often, but all I would have to do is shut it off, and start it back up again, and the light goes off. Tonight I started the truck, the light came on, and no matter what I do, I can't get the light to shut off now. What would a brake light have to do with the transmission shifting, heater fan not working, nor the speedometer? Any idea's what would cause this? Could a sensor be going bad? Any help would be great.

sounds like you have some pretty tricky electrical problems. The brake light itself is not going to have anything to do with the speedometer or the transmission, though I am guessing that whatever is causing your brake light to come on is also the cause of your other problems. Possibly ignition switch or bad ground or bad computer....it's really hard to say without being able to diagnose it "hands on." Usually in a case like yours I would start by singling out ONE of the problems and find and fix it and more often than not you will find that the other problems were usually caused by the same malfunction. I would also look over all the wiring harnesses really well for places that are pinched, melted, or rubbing on something. Good luck!

I checked all the fuses and found one that had alot of rust on the prongs. In my owners booklet it shows this fuse as: Ac/Htr 25 amp. My book shows this fuse runs, H.V.A.C., 4WD, Aux, Batt, Relay. I took out the fuse and cleaned both prongs, put it back in, started the truck, light went off and everything seems to be working fine, for now. I'll have to keep an eye on it for a while, I don't know if it was the fuse, or the light just went off by restarting the truck, thats how I use to get it to go off. The fuse did look pretty bad though, I hope that was the problem. Thank you for the help, bringing the truck into the shop just before X-Mas wasn't something I really needed. Thanks again, Merry Christmas..............

Lucky you. I had to take my vehicle to a shop for a new fuel pump. $327 later Christmas presents will be late this year. I have done in-tank fuel pumps before but never with a full tank of gas and with it being a windy day with a high of 20 degrees outside on the side of an Interstate highway as well as not being positive of the problem.
