VW Reverse Problems..

I have 1997 VW Golf/Cabrio 2.0L, 5 Spd... that recently when put in reverse it slips out of it and makes this god awful grinding noise. If I place my hand on the shifter and hold in Reverse and give it minimal gas it'll stay in reverse. If I give it any sort of gas while holding it reverse it'll pop out and make grinding noise that neighbors are getting to love by now. My question is it possible to tell if I have a bad transmission or maybe just be in need of a bushing kit for the shifter mechanism. I'll take any and all suggestions and it's my wife's car and she loves the thing so I need help. Thanks

hope this helps

A transmission that jumps out of gear may be due to bent, binding or loose shift linkage, a loose transmission or clutch housing, worn or damaged input shaft bearings, broken motor mount, worn tapered gear teeth or synchronizer hub splines, loose shifter fork or rails, interlock hardware thatís broken or missing, or excessive end play or runout in the output shaft or countergear
