broken tailpipe
Dear forum members,
I have a '94 Mitsubishi Expo. Seems the tailpipe broke at the joint just before the muffler. Runs like crap, backfires and so on. I got under there and slapped a beer?can?duct?tape patch on it and was just wondering if that will be all right until Japanese custom forces me to junk it? That and I am wondering if this broken pipe is the reason for the way it's running.
After patching it up as best I could I have found that I can drive along at the speed limit with little or no problems. Though I haven't tried, I am pretty sure that if I floor it it will be bop-bop-bopping.
Darn shame that I have to replace this desirable car because of a broken tailpipe.
Any advice or comments greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
steven

In Japan there is a $1000.00 minimum mandatory vehicle inspection that is coming up in March. Consequently, that and anything else they find added to the cost of a muffler would be too much lettuce, when you can buy another car for the price of the muffler with 2 years SHAKEN, as it is called.
Thanks,

dealer said they would replace the muffler along with the tail pipe assembly because it was too difficult to remove. So, I'll attempt to do that. Dealer also gave me a list of parts and where I could get them. The muffler, which works fine, goes for 35,000 yen.
I also had another guy look at it and he'll get back to me about the cost to R/R the tail pipe.
Thing is that when you add the $1000 I'll be paying in March to this repair, you can nearly replace the car for the same thing on the net here.
I am hooked on this car though, so rromy in back and the sliding door is excellent for tennis/kicking back.
Thanks for your replies and yes too many cars wasted, not just cars as you might imagine.
Enjoy,
s

Today's exchange rate is roughly 130yen to the dollar, so 35,000 is nearly $350.00.
In Japan, every 2 years you have to pay for a vehicle inspection. The minimum is $1000.00 add to that any repairs neede to pass.
So, if I spend $700.00 on the exhaust and another grand for the shaken than for a couple hundred more I could have bought a newer used car probably in better shape, with far lower mileage and 2 years shaken included.
After looking closere at the muffler I have to agree with the dealer in that it will be too difficult to remove the muffler from the broken tail pipe assembly, sad to say.
It's looking more and more like my ride will be heading to the junk-yard, at a cost of at least 200 smackers, ouch!

Japan
Japan is very strict on cars you will not see any beaters over there. There are many places here that take advantage of this and ship low mile engines to the US just because of this fact.

I bought my car with 70,000 k's and put 20,000 on it in 20 months.
J-folks buy new cars every 4-5 years.
So, let me ask everyone this:
Car has 90,000 k's.
Needs $700.00 repair.
Plus $1000.00 inspection fee.
I am seeing newer model of same car with fewer K's and 2 years SHAKEN
for less than $2000.00 or there about.
Do I spend $200.00 and junk my car?

Yes, that would be nice. The $200.00 represents a minimum charge for scrapping the car.
The more I think about it the more sense it makes to junk the car and get another with fewer miles.
