2001 Mitsubishi galant idle motor control problems

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant V6. The problem is when it was taken in for service the mechanic informed me that the idle speed control motor was bad and that it would cost over $500.00 for the replacement parts. Can this servo, valve be repaired without such an expense? The vehicle seems to surge at times and the idle is erradic.

Generally, the repair procedure is to troubleshoot down to the part, then replace the part. Other than that, you could of course go as far as you want on your own. You just will not have a book to guide you.

Don't overlook junk yard parts.

You should be able to clean an Idle Speed Control yourself. Mechanics never do this because there is more profits in replacing parts than cleaning them. If you can soak it in something overnight that would be even better. For example, I personally would soak mine in gasoline in a jar. However, repeated applicatioleaner from a spray can (usually carbeurator cleaner type of thing thats made for fuel injection). If you need to buy a new one, try NAPA, not the Mitsubishi dealer. I can buy an IAC for my Escort for something like $40-$50. Changing an IAC is about as easy as changing an air filter or doing an oil change on most cars so don't pay someone to do it. Also, if you search around the internet, you will find ample evidence to suggest that Mitsubishi shouldn't be on your list of acceptable cars.

Also don't overlook the possibility that you have other problems like a dirty MAF (which also needs periodical cleaning) or a vacuum leak.

Excellent advice guys. However:

I must respectfully disagree about Mitsubishi's (Galant's anyway). I bought a 2003 Galant & CR says that '03 Galant's are a "Good Bet." My car is awesome & given me almost no problems. Would I buy another Galant? No. There are other cars out there in the same price range that are better built & get better gas mileage!
