84 ford f250 6.9 won't stay running

I'm new to diesels, so I don't know much about them. I have a 84 N/A, auto 2wd. It has either 215k or 115k on it. Runs very strong. Just today the motor seems to bog down then pick back up without me moving the throttle. Like it's not getting enough fuel, then getting it. Something wasn't right with the idle once today also, it was very rough sounding when I stopped. How dependable is the fuel pump or whatever the valve is on the top front of the motor? OK, I just went out to start it. It won't start, when it does it dies right back out. What could be making it run like this? Thanks

it sounds like you're asking about the injector pump. they can go bad (wear) and are rebuildable by a diesel specialist. there is also a fuel pump that supplies the injector pump. also a filter/seperator that removes debris and water. the good news is it's not the ignition system .
