nissan cracked distributor

the distributor in my 1997 pathfinder froze up solid causing the unit to crack. Unfortunatley it also caused the cam shaft gear that drives it to disintegrate. The result is 1500.00 in repair costs. My question, therefore, is what could be the underlying cause of this occurance. I will spend the money to fix it only if I can have some sort of guarantee that there was no other cause other than a faulty distribtor. Does anyone have any expertise with this type of problem?

thanks.

I'd look at the condition of engine internal cleaness.

How's the oil look like and how's the oil/lubricating system look like can determine the cause of broken distributor's/camshaft's drive gear. It could be from weak oil pump/dirty oil/lack of maintainance and or clogging oil passage to the cylinder head(left side).

I'd ask to look into it and see what they say before make decision on fixing it or go with reman engine.

oil was changed two weeks ago. That will eliminate that cause. But how do you determine if an oil pump is weak?
