97 mercury sable alternator install

I am trying to replace the alternator in my ford. It has overhead cam and the alternator is underneath the engine, I took it off but can't for the life of me get it out, there is no room. I thought maybe I could take out the bottom crank shaft pulley but don't know how. can anyone advise me? thanks ted
