oil pressure or gauge ?? 96 ram 360

96 dodge ram 1500 4x4 360 52,000 mi. castrol syntec. notice the gauge was erratic? pressure was on zero to 20 then up to 40 etc.checked oil, ok, is due to change. red light is working and not on. drove truck home 50 mi. and did not lock up whew!
are these gauges electronic, sending unit ? any advice and or input?

More likely the oil sending unit is the problem, I've seen lots of them like that, the sending unit is located on the back of the engine next to the distributor.

Change the oil and look for leaks around the pressure switch. These chryslers were notorious for faulty/ leaky switches. Never been much of a believer in synthetic anything.

Syntec is a group 3 synthetic, hydrocracked petroleum oil.... anyway, that shouldn't be the problem, castrols a pretty good oil, though how long have you been using it? It should have kept things pretty clean if you've always have been using it. Other then the sender, it could be a partially clogged oil pump pickup screen.....

tks to all for the info. as soon as it warms up some i am going to change oil and filter and the try a sending unit and or check connections. will let all know when i do.
