turn signal shorting out

1996 Ford Ranger. My turn indicator seems to have a short or a bad switch. It works when I it goes down to turn left but when I click it up I need to push it real hard to get it to blink. And also, sometimes my headlights will flicker on and off when i try to push up to make my blinker blink. This makes me belive it is a short in the column. Can "I DO IT MYSELF" or should a $75 an hour mechanic need to look at it. Thanks for the help...

probably a bad switch

yes you can do it yourself
get a haynes manual and follow the directions
especially note the airbag cautions if you have one

it should be an easy job

and you probably have a worn switch with an open not a short.

I would lean towards the worn switch also
It might be worth checking at autozone.com for instructions
The may have them posted there

Ford is easy to do. I just replaced the bearings in a 96 ford column.
