1997 Ford Explorer odemeter problem

I purchased my 1997 Ford Explorer, 6 cylinder, 4 wheel drive about a year ago. A short time later (no warrenty) the odometer stopped working. About a week ago it started working again, but does not seem to be advancing properly. Also, now my heat gauge does not seem to be working; before it would fall back when the motor was shut down, now it stays in one position all the time. What should I look for? or should I change the odometer console? or what sensors, if any, should I change?
