Faint whine while accelerating -- Taurus

I drive a '99 Mercury Sable -- a dressed-up Taurus. While accelerating yesterday, I thought I heard a distant siren. It turned out to be a faint whine that varied up and down as I pressed and let up on the gas. Seems to go away at highway cruising speed, but I'm not sure. I'd sure appreciate any suggestions on what might be wrong and some indication as to whether I should have this checked out right away. Thanks
