egr valve

Have a 94 pontiac grand am, 3100 cc V6 engine, the guy i took it to ran a scan an told me the egr
valve was bad, he said to take it apart an spray carburtor cleaner in there and drive it for a few days,
have done so, it got better but still not right, any ideas before i take it back to him and have that expensive thing replaced?

The best thing to do is get the actual code #
Either from the guy or go to a DIY auto parts place that reads them for free or a small fee
It is important to know why the guy said you should clean your EGR, and why he said you have a vacuum leak (which cannot be fixed with carb cleaner)

Unfortunately, there is not only one code # regarding EGR and it's function
It could be an easy DIY fix
But we'll need the code # to help diagnose your problem
...which you didn't mention

What was/is the actual problem?
