98 Chevy Tracker/ S E S Light

After replacing the oxygen sensors and disconnecting the battery the Service engine light is still on. A mechanic has done a vacumn test on the egr valve and said that it is working fine. Does any one know if I should remove the egr valve to look for a possible build up of carbon, or just replace the egr valve. The engine will surge from a cold start until warmed up.

you should have codes read in the computer there is lots of things that could cause a check engine light why do you even suspect the egr is causing a problem.
