inconsistent grinding sound

2001, Ford Escort ZX2

I think my brakes are going out because I hear grinding when I push on the brakes but it is very inconsistent. I do not always hear the grinding when I push on the brakes and I have heard the grinding when I am on the gas.

What exactly do I need to repair?

Brake pads and maybe rotors. (This is just my opinion.)

Take the wheels off and look at the inside and outside of the rotor for scrapes. And look at the inner and outer pad for thickness. You will also see a tab on the pad that hangs off the side like a hook if it is a 1 or 2mm away from the rotor you need brakes

Just to a regular brake service on it , they're not too expensive, have new pads installed and rotors and drums turned.
Grinding noise on front wheels when not braking ? also a sign of front brakes worn out.
