back again 91 geo / no third gear

hello again,
i got the manual for the mx-17 and did an r/r. the valves have all been cleaned and all went well. i noticed that the direct-solenoid is cracked and the "ball" may not seat all the way.
i did re-assemble anyway and still have the same problem.
i find that the direct solenoid is rather "pricey" and need to know if a "stuck open" condition on that part would cause no shift into third. reverse works fine so i thought that that part was ok , but i know that the 2nd to third valve is moving ok now
any thoughts ?
here was my old post

Lightbulb 91 geo metro tranny problem(s)

I have 3 questions.
1.) Are you in reasonable towing distance of Orange County, NY?
2.) Will an 86 Chevy Sprint 5 speed tranny and clutch fit in a 91 Geo Metro and replace the A/T with no hassle?
3.) Are you willing to take a towable vehicle off my hands to get yourself a bunch of free spare parts?
