Ugh Help please with my hoopty
Hi There,
I have a 1989 Mazda 626 2.2L without Turbo. My car was running great and now will not fire when its being turned over to start. We have replaced the ignition coil and distributor. The spark plugs are in great shape and are in working order. Any ideas? She will turn over but not fire.
Thanks so much for your help.

That was something we had checked out too. We disconnected the line coming from the fuel pump. When we turn the ignition over, it sputters gas so the fuel pump was not the issue. Everything is getting gas as it should be. This is really got all of us stumped. Weird huh? and thanks so much again for the suggestion.

just because it has gas coming out of the line doesnt mean that it is ok most fuel injected engines run around 40 psi fuel pressure some models are even higher a fuel pump only putting out 5-10 psi is enough to sputter fuel out the line but not enough to start the engine.
spraying a small amount of starting fluid down the intake to see if the engine starts and runs for a second is a better indicator that it is not getting fuel if you dont have a guage to read fuel pressure.

If you,ve replaced the coil and distributor any problem with spark should have been handled. As bejay said, spray some starting fluid down her throat and see if she runs on that. If not, make sure the dist rotor is turning while cranking. These engines are good for timing belts and there is a bulletin out on the timing belt tensioner..........I'm just not sure of the year frame here at the house

Check for Dist rotation while cranking. Timing belt is now a real possibility and if it's the case, 2.2's will bend valves (2.2 or 2.0???)........and that takes the problem to a whole new level
