Pickup problems

I have a 1988 GMC K2500 5.7 engine. When I drive down the road some times, it starts to sputter, if i dont put it in netural it will die, then I have a hard time starting it. When it does start I get bad cloud of black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Could the problem be the IAC sensor or the Throttle body sensor. Thanks for your help.

you should start by checking for codes by jumpering the a and b terminals on the diagnostic connector under the drivers dash and turning the key on and counting the check engine light flashes it will flash each code 3 times starting with 12 and then repeating over again.
