AC not accepting a charge

1999, VW Jetta, Auto,85,000 miles
I just tried to charge my AC with a 134-A freon but for some reason it is not accepting any from the can. I followed the procedure by tightening the recharge kit screw to puncture the top of the can and backed the screw to let freon flow but non goes into ac unit. And yes, the AC is running with the clutch engage. There is freon coming out of the can, I checked it by opening the valve while the other end of the hose was not hooked up. I also tried the other way around and removed the hose connected to the can and connected the other end to the AC and warm air came out of the car AC. I thought that should be cold. Should I bleed all the air out of the AC? I think I got the correct connection becuase it is the one that fits the quick connect that came with the charging kit, it is the smaller quick connection.
