4.2 Liter Ford V-6
Hi folks, this is my first post so bear with me.
I recently came into a 1997 Ford E150 van with the 4.2 V-6 and the AOD auto trans. The engine will not turn beyond a certain point in the rotation with a leaking head gasket or some other internal water leak the most likely culprit. The van was running fine until it was parked about two months ago, and would not restart. Collective wisdom seems to be that there was a slow leak that was not noticeable driving, but filled a cylinder when the van sat.
Does anyone have a similar experience or any info to assist??
Thanks, Fnsane

I also have a 97 Ford 4.2L V6 engine (F150). Headgasket failure seems to be a common problem. If you suspect water in the cylinder, do not crank for you may damage the engine.
f150online.com has a forum and you will find several threads on 1997 4.2L V6 gasket failure. You may want to compare your symptoms to theirs. Note that the forum is not moderated by pros. I would rely on the mods here for repair decision making.

HEY GUTS BEFORE YOU GO ALL THE WAY INTO THE HEADS , CHECK THE INTAKE GASKETS. THATS THE PROBLEM AREA ON THAT ENGINE. i HAVE DONE SEVERAL INTAKE JOBS ON THOSE ENGINES AS WELL AS 1996 AND UP G.M. 3.1 , AND 5.7 ENGINES. THE INTAKE GASKET IS MADE UP OF PLASTIC WITH RUBBER SEALS AROUND THE INSIDE.(JUNK)THE WATER PORTS ARE IN THE FRONT 2 AND REAR 2 CYLINDERS. PULL THOSE PLUGS FIRST.I WOULD BET ON THIS BEING THE PROB. GOOD LUCK GUYS
