can't remove front Cam gear, why?

Besidees being obvious, a friend has a Mazda diesel engine 2ltr, which needs a new front seal behind the Cog/gear thingy . anyway, he has run into a brick wall and can't remove the cog, says there are no holding pins nuts etc, and can't understand why when using a pulley it won't come off, for me, sheesh, changing a tranny over in Sons wagon was hard enough, money is an issue, why he is trying do it himself, will go around there this Fri and see if two buttheads are better than one, will also take a very large gentle pursuader with me (sledge hammer) for frustration sake. any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Have posted this q's a few places and as of yet no help
Thanks

not familiar with the engine you are working on, just might suggest that if it is pressed on cam gear using the correct puller and possibly even a torch may be needed to apply heat to the cam gear.
